About the Modern Golden Rule
We worked on the Golden Rule to ensure it is a user-friendly all round longboard that will give the rider the ability to ride each wave easily. The overall style of the board has an emphasis on stability, control and smooth turning. The Golden Rule is all about having the volume where it is needed. Having the right amount of foam under your torso for fast paddling or foiling the tail out so the board can perform when when turning. We love the way the Golden Rule rides.

OUTLINE: OUTLINE: You will find The Golden Rule has a very balanced outline, we have pulled the nose in to give it a bit more of a performance feel, a parallel mid-section which creates a huge standing zone, and we have tapered the tail to help break a line and turn smoothly.
ROCKER: Nice and low through the entry makes for fast paddling, which equates to being able to get onto the waves earlier. Relaxed through the middle, but with enough curve to facilitate a smooth turning arc on the wave face. And finally, there’s a little extra lift in the tail to make turning easier for surfers moving up in their abilities.
CONTOURS:We have given The Golden Rule a slight concave in the nose, then simplified soft vee in the mid section, running into vee/double concave through the tail. This is designed to help promote smoother rail-to-rail transitions on a longer board, yet still provide control in steeper sections, and deliver a feeling of pivotal sensitivity when turning right off the tail.
FOIL: We have thinned our the nose and tail from previous models also smooth it out towards the rails, providing added stability and making this board simple to ride, regardless of your skill level.
PERFORMANCE: The Golden Rule has volume distributed to give the rider the best chance of having the most fun on the wave. The ease at which it can get into the wave and then perform will delight everyone, from those new to longboarding through to seasoned veterans. You will be able to tap into the true versatile nature of this board and its reliability across many different types of waves. If you’re a traveller, or just like having one dependable longboard in your quiver, this is it.

The Golden Rule 9'6 Modern longboard has been great. Easy to paddle, stable and easy to turn. The volume really helps to keep me on top of the waves and catch more of them. I'm no pro but I really enjoy the versatility this board offers.

I am really enjoying my surfing now. The Modern Golden Rule has changed my understanding of how responsive a Mal can be. It turns, holds and glides when asked, and with most of our fat slow beach breaks that’s great. For the past 15 years I’ve moved from a 6’6” to a 7’ but really scratching to get reasonable waves. I’ve joined the Mal crew sitting out the back just gliding into waves that I wouldn’t even consider in the past. At 67yrs I’m pretty sure sure I’ll not be getting back onto shorter boards to quickly. Highly recommend anyone thinking of moving to a Mal the Golden Rule is well worth a look.

The board does everything GSI says it will. I particularly like the lower entry rocker and rail shape of this model. The outline not only looks good but is practicable with good width in the tail to help catch small junky waves. At 92kgs it provides plenty of float and paddle power. Overall, very happy; hoping build quality allows the board to give years of fun.
Been surfing since 1964, mainly Texas with travel to other countries. The predominant surf in south Texas in the summer is very short period and small. The flotation that the G R provides is great and it responds quite well. Quick turns and good acceleration, very stable. I have another longboard for the winter when the surf gets larger and faster, but the G R stills does well. Excellent board for the money
entry rocker is good for quicker drops.
Used it on waves from 1-4 ft so far and it has been great. I use the 9’1” and it handles my size pretty well (6’3, 245 lbs). It’s pushing my limits toward an intermediate rider and I don’t have problems gaining speed or catching waves. Still feels like a longboard but the speed generation is insane almost as if it were a shorter board.
This has been a good beginner board for me, though I probably would have been better off starting on something like the Double Wide.
I snaffled a 9ft 1" Modern Golden Rule Longboard with a lovely green tint at a great price. Especially for an older, big bloke who's no longer so quick on the pop-up (was I ever?), this board feels so comfortable and natural both to paddle and ride; and compares very favorably to my old McTavish Fireball. It feels like exactly the right board for me now and for the foreseeable!
I could not be happier with my purchase. The board looks great and surfed well. It was easier to turn than I imagined it would be.
I am 70 years old and weigh 70 kg and have the 9 ft 6 version. This board has more than doubled my wave count. The board is really easy to paddle as fast as incoming waves are travelling so I can pick up waves well before they break allowing me plenty of time to get to my feet. The board turns easily, but of course it's too long to do any fast turns or bounces off the lip. Paddling out, no need to duck dive as the board powers through the white water. One small problem is slight instability when riding whitewater after a closeout, compared to my short board.
I am very satisfied with the performance of this board. Turning is comparable to a 7’0 and with the speed to match, but retains the stability of a traditional longboard. I highly recommend this board to anyone looking for a place to start their surfing career.

I have the 9’1” and as 60 yrs+ Surfer and punching 100kg in rubber, this is my absolute go to board. It achieve all its claims, great rail to rail transition, flowing arch turns and great foam distribution to allow early entry.Great on the local beachies but think it would be awesome on a north coast point break. Good one Kel. An absolute keeper!
This board is very similar to my old "Stranger" tri fin 9' mal that was stolen from my house.
Haven't got another yet but look longingly at this one
